Wike Dares Amaechi To Leave PDP Now; Amaechi Fires Back

The Supervising Minister
of Education, Nyesom
Wike, on Sunday dared
the Rivers State Governor,
Rotimi Amaechi, and his
supporters to leave the
Peoples Democratic Party
for another political party.
But Governor Amaechi
said Wike should be more
interested in how to get
students back to the
school instead of leaving
Abuja every week to play
dirty politics in Rivers
State.
"As supervising
minister for
education, it should
have been
reasonable for Wike
to bother about the
fact that students
roam the streets and
take to heinous
crimes because of a
protracted strike by
lecturers."
Wike said Amaechi and
his supporters should join
another party if they
believed they are popular,
promising that he (Wike)
and his followers would
celebrate the exit of the
governor from the PDP.
The minister, who made
this remark during a rally
organised by the
Grassroots Development
Initiative in Port Harcourt,
said “If you think you are
so popular, why not join
another party. The day
they join another party,
we will do thanksgiving.
We will have to celebrate
their exit.
“The day you dare it is
the day you see the
consequences. We are
going to resist any
attempt to say that our
votes will not count.
Everybody is jittery. Why
are they jittery? We are
not worried, they are
worried.”
Wike claimed that the
support for President
Goodluck Jonathan in
Niger Delta is not based
on sentiments but
because he (Jonathan)
had done well.
Reacting to Wike's
outburst, Chief of Staff,
Government House, Chief
Tony Okocha, said he
should concern himself
more about the capital
flight and the attendant
brain-drain in the
education sector in
Nigeria.
“Rivers people are wiser.
Wike’s ranting every
weekend in Rivers leaves
much to be imagined
especially as the country
is relapsing to the Dark
Age.
“Rivers people are not
opposed to Mr. President.
Wike should stop his
attempt to commonise the
office of Mr. President in
his attempt to curry under
served favour.
“What may be in the issue
is purely ideology, which
is common with great
minds. Wike should be
thought that ideas rule the
world. Petty mind discuss
people,” Okocha said.

N255m Cars Scandal: NCAA Says It Can't Find The Documents

The controversy trailing

the purchase of 2 BMW

armoured cars for the

minister of aviation, Stella

Oduah, has taken a

ridiculous dimension. The

agency at the centre of

the controversial purchase

of the vehicles and the

nation’s civil aviation

body - Nigerian Civil

Aviation Authority (NCAA)

- has denied that it has

any document relating to

the acquisition of the

controversial bulletproof

vehicles.

The development came as

indications emerged that

Stella Oduah may have

used the cars as a

smokescreen to engage in

serious money laundering,

with the knowledge of

higher authorities...

Curiously, NCAA’s denial,

which came after a

seven-day ultimatum

given to it by a human

rights activist, Femi

Falana (SAN), to furnish

his law firm with

information pertaining to

the transaction, also

contradicts its statement

before the House of Reps

Committee on Aviation

that the procurement of

the “operational vehicles”

was provided for in the

NCAA’s budget.

Falana had last week

invoked the Freedom of

Information Act when he

wrote the NCAA director-

general, Mr Fola

Akinkuotu, demanding the

documents, including

those of budgetary

approval and due process

for the whole transaction

as well as all the papers

of past acquisition of

such armoured cars.

In its reply to the request,

through the NCAA legal

adviser, Mr E.K

Chukwuma, Akinkuotu

said documents relating

to the latest purchase or

even previous purchases

of such cars are not in

their possession.

The letter reads: “I am

directed to your letter

dated 21st October 2013

on the above matter

(Request for information

on N255m armoured cars

for Aviation Minister, Ms

Stella Oduah) and to

inform you that the

Nigerian Civil Aviation

Authority is not in

possession of any

document relating to the

purchase of armoured

cars for the Aviation

Minister, Ms Stella Oduah.

“With regard to your

request for records of

previous purchase of

armoured cars by the

Aviation Ministry or NCAA,

I am to inform you that

the Nigerian Civil Aviation

Authority does not have

such records.”

Not satisfied, Falana

noted yesterday that he

would relate this latest

position of the NCAA to

the Economic and

Financial Crimes

Commission, EFCC, as a

back-up to a petition he

had written to it.

Armoured cars also

missing in NSA’s security

list

The controversial

bulletproof cars for Stella

Uduah are not on the

national security adviser’s

(NSA) official list of

armoured cars available

anywhere in Nigeria.

Ordinarily, no car dealer

or end user, including

private individuals,

security agencies and

government parastatals,

can bring in armoured

cars into the country

without obtaining end user

certificates from the office

of the NSA in Abuja.

Reporting that no

authorization certificate

was ever issued to either

the minister or the NCAA

to procure the

controversial vehicles, a

source said: “We have

thoroughly checked our

list and I can confirm that

at no time did we issue

end user certificate to

anyone to procure any

such cars. It is likely the

cars do not exist and that

the documents were either

forged to steal public

funds.

“But if the cars indeed

exist, the minister, the

NCAA and Coscharis

Motors will have to

explain why they sneaked

vehicles into our country

without authorisation. It is

a serious violation, and

the minister and other

people involved have a lot

of explanations to make.”

3-year-old Boy Dies While Hugging Electrocuted Mum And 3 Others In Lagos -

**Oh Nigeria...~SAD~

Victims of the electrocution

at Oniwaya

Junction, Agege

According to PUNCH report,

on

Wednesday, October 16, a

day after

Muslim folks celebrated

Sallah, tragedy

struck at Oniwaya Junction,

Agege,

Lagos, as a high tension

cable

electrocuted four people in

the area.

A woman, identified as Mrs.

Oluwajedalo but popularly

called Iya

Fathia, survived the

electrocution but

lost his three-year-old son,

Ayomide,

who ran towards her and

embraced her

as electric shock overtook

her.

The incident was still a hot

topic of

discussion when Saturday

PUNCH

visited the area on Tuesday

as some

people were seen

discussing it in the

front of house Number 88,

Oniwaya

Road, where the incident

occurred.

There is a transformer

located at

Oniwaya Junction. House

no 88 is just

two houses away from the

transformer.

A resident of the house, Mr.

James

Eboh, promptly pointed to a

paper on a

wall, a poster of the four

victims of the

electrocution – Ayomide

Oluwajedalo

(3), Sunday Hisaun (25),

Samson

Akinrinsoye (25) and

Matthew (37).

Eboh shook his head and

said the

three-year-old victim

should not have

died.

He said:

The incident occurred

around 8pm.

There was a spark on the

transformer

over there. As we heard the

spark,

everybody scampered for

safety

because it had happened

before. A

cable detached from the

transformer as

the spark went off. It fell on

this shop

here (in the front of No 88).

Iya Fathia

moved towards the shop to

warn the

shop owner, who was

inside at the

time. But she stepped on a

metal on

which the shop was built.

As the electric shock went

through her

body, she was shaking

violently.

Ayomide who sighted her

mother at

the entrance of the house,

ran towards

her and embraced her. He

died on the

spot. But his mother

survived.

I am the closest friend of

Iya Fathia

(Ayomide’s mother) in this

house. I was

one of those who took her

to a hospital

in Egbeda. It is just sad

because the

woman is not sane at the

moment.

Asked how Mrs.

Oluwajedalo could be

located, Eboh said her

family had

requested for her discharge

at the

hospital in Egbeda where

she was

undergoing treatment and

taken her to

Ijebu-Ode.

“The woman was still in

shock and she

did not seem to be

improving. The

family had spent a lot on

her

treatment. They decided to

move her to

Ijebu-Ode because the cost

was

becoming unbearable for

them. The

last time I spoke with her in

Egbeda,

she was not sounding

normal. She was

only saying, ‘My son is not

dead! My

son is okay! My son is not

dead”, Eboh

said.

He explained that the young

victim had

been buried at the Jafojo

Cemetery.

Abiola Oladimeji, who was

in his shop

when the high tension cable

fell on it,

said he survived by divine

grace. “I was

told Iya Fathia was coming

to alert us

when she was electrocuted.

It is just

unfortunate”, he said.

It was a wonder that

Oladimeji was not

electrocuted because his

shop on which

the cable fell is a moveable

metal

container.

When Saturday PUNCH got

to the scene

on Tuesday, the cable that

caused the

electrocution had been

removed. It is

common to see high

tension cables

hanging precariously over

residential

areas in Lagos.

Women Who Are More Powerful Than Jonathan

Since inception, President

Goodluck Jonathan’s

administration has been

accused of impunity, usually

caused by decisions and

actions of the President,

including those of his ministers

and close associates.

Most of the glaring cases of

abuse of power including

reckless spending of taxpayers’

money have been carried out

by the women in Jonathan’s

cabinet. These women have

proven to be more powerful

than the

number one citizen of Nigeria

because despite public outcries

that greet some of their

decisions, they go scot-free.

Those who fall in this

seemingly untouchable

category are the First Lady,

Mrs. Patience Jonathan; the

Coordinating Minister for the

Economy and Minister of

Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-

Iweala; the Minister of

Petroleum Resources, Mrs.

Diezani Alison-Madueke; the

Director-General of the

Securities and Exchange

Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh;

and the Minister of Aviation,

Ms. Stella Oduah.

These powerful women have

some things in common. They

are all from the South-East and

South-South geopolitical

zones. Four of them had their

higher education in the United

States and two of them are

daughters of traditional rulers.

Needless to say they occupy

some of the most strategic and

‘lucrative’ positions in the

Federal Government.

PATIENCE JONATHAN

In Nigeria’s history, Patience

Jonathan is believed to be the

most powerful First Lady in

terms of the amount of

influence she has over her

husband and his cabinet. Mrs.

Jonathan first gave a glimpse

into the enormous power she

wields in 2011 when she

traversed the country,

campaigning for her husband in

a way that irked many

Nigerians.

Several calls by individuals and

groups to the President to

restrain his wife yielded no

result. Also, in June this year,

in apparent violation of the

electoral act, Mrs. Jonathan

reportedly started campaigning

for her husband ahead of the

2015 elections. Another show

of impunity by the President’s

wife is the way she cripples any

town or city she visits with her

long motorcade, including

bulletproof limousines and

scores of armed policemen.

She grounded Lagos in 2012

when she visited to say “thank

you” to some women groups

for their support in electing her

husband. Despite the protest

by several Nigerians, who felt

that their right to move freely in

their country was violated by

the movement of an unelected

individual, the President’s wife

was never cautioned, at least

not publicly. Instead, the

Presidency rose to her defence,

giving her the liberty to do more

in other cities. Her visits and

grounding of traffic in Port

Harcourt and Warri were also

greeted with wide

condemnations.

To show how powerful she is,

Mrs. Jonathan publicly

admitted making attempts to

dictate to the Governor of

Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, a

move that largely precipitated

the ongoing political crisis in

the state.

In Aso Rock, where she resides

with her husband, the fear of

Mrs. Jonathan is the beginning

of wisdom as she leaves no

one in doubt that she is in

charge. There is always a

retinue of favour seekers

waiting to see her daily.

Mrs. Jonathan, a native of

Bayelsa State, was born in Port

Harcourt on October 25, 1957

and holds National Certificate of

Education in Mathematics and

Biology from the Rivers State

College of Arts and Science,

and a Bachelor of Education

degree in biology and

psychology from the University

of Port Harcourt.

NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA

Right from when the

negotiation to bring her from

the World Bank started, it was

obvious that Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-

Iweala was bound to wield so

much power in Jonathan’s

government.

With her position as the

coordinating minister for the

economy (a new position

created for her) and Finance

Minister, Okonjo-Iweala, who is

currently 83rd on Forbes’

global list of powerful women,

calls the shots as far as

Nigeria’s economy is

concerned. While doing that,

she has called the bluff of many

including state governors and

the National Assembly without

any consequence.

The state governors, who have

complained about the shabby

way the minister treat them,

have called for her removal

while the Academic Staff Union

of Universities has called her a

‘dictator.’ But no matter the

protest, Okonjo-Iweala remains

a darling of the President.

The sacking of Mr. Shuaib

Yushau as the Head, Media and

Information Unit of the National

Emergency Management

Agency, after he wrote what

was considered a critical article

against Okonjo-Iweala, further

showed that the minister was

not to be messed with.

The article entitled ‘Still on

Okonjo-Iweala over

Controversial Appointments’,

published on March 6, called

on the minister “to ensure that

appointments into important

positions should be done in

credible and transparent

manner that can withstand

public scrutiny.”

Similarly, Mr. Lawrence Ani,

was reportedly suspended

indefinitely from his job as

Saturday Editor of Thisday

Newspaper for publishing a

story that cited data that

indicated a drop in Nigeria’s

Gross Domestic Product under

Okonjo-Iweala’s watch.

In 2011, against the opinion of

the majority of Nigerians,

Okonjo-Iweala and the Minister

of Petroleum Resources,

Diezani Alison-Madueke,

insisted on the removal of fuel

subsidy, and literally ordered it

on the outset of 2012, resulting

in the Occupy Nigeria protest.

Okonjo-Iweala, who also

served as finance minister and

foreign minister under President

Olusegun Obansanjo and as a

Managing Director at the World

Bank, was born on June 13,

1954 to Professor Chukuka

Okonjo, who is the Obi

(traditional ruler) of Ogwashi-

Uku.

She graduated from Harvard

University in 1977, and earned

her Ph.D. in regional economic

development from the

Massachusetts Institute of

Technology in 1981.

She is married to Ikemba Iweala

from Abia State.

DIEZANI ALISON-MADUEKE

Virtually all sections of the

Nigerian society have called for

the resignation of the Petroleum

Resources Minister, Diezani

Alison-Madueke, all to no avail.

Most of those who sought her

removal had cited several

allegations of corrupt practices

under her watch as reasons for

their demand.

After the revelation of massive

fraud in the fuel subsidy

administration to the tune of

N1.7trn, many had thought

that heads would roll, including

that of Alison-Madueke, who

supervised the rot. Some heads

did roll, but not that of the

queen of the Nigeria oil and gas

industry.

Till date, the Presidency has

not queried or probed Diezani

over allegations against her

and the indictment of

departments under her by

several panels, including those

headed by Nuhu Ribadu,

Farouk Lawan, and Aigboje Aig-

Imoukhuede as well as the

Nigerian Extractive Industry

Transparency Initiative.

Diezani has also not explained

to Nigeria, whom she was

appointed to serve, what role

she played in the massive

corruption that led to the loss

of huge amounts of public fund.

Apart from the demands for the

Alison-Madueke’s resignation

and prosecution by civil society

groups, who led the Occupy

Nigeria protest, the House of

Representatives also

demanded her removal as

minister.

Despite this, the President did

not suspend her, and gave no

explanation for that. This

shows how powerful she is.

Alison-Madueke is the first

woman to hold the position of

Minister of Petroleum

Resources in Nigeria, and in

October 2010 she became the

first woman to head a country’s

delegation at the annual OPEC

conference. She was also the

first female Minister of

Transportation, and the first

woman to be appointed to the

board of Shell Petroleum

Development Company Nigeria.

Alison-Madueke was born on

December 6, 1960 in Port

Harcourt.

She graduated from Howard

University in 1992, with a

Bachelor’s degree in

architecture and returned to

Nigeria to join Shell Petroleum

Development Corporation.

About 10 years later, she

earned an MBA from Cambridge

University and was appointed

as the first female executive

director of Shell Nigeria.

In 1999, she got married to

Admiral Alison Madueke (retd),

one-time Chief of Naval Staff

who was at different times

military governor of Imo and

Anambra states.

STELLA ODUAH

Not many are aware of the

tremendous power of the

Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah,

in Jonathan’s government. For

her role in Jonathan’s 2011

campaign, she was reportedly

rewarded with a ministerial

appointment to the aviation

ministry, even though she had

no prior training in the field of

aviation.

Many believe that the President

feels indebted to her for her role

as the Director of Finance and

Administration of the Jonathan/

Sambo Campaign Organisation

and in the establishment of

Neighbour-to-Neighbour outfit,

which reportedly spent billions

of naira on adverts and media

propaganda in favour of

Jonathan, especially while the

Occupy Nigeria protest lasted.

Considering this relationship

with Jonathan, it should not be

a surprise that Oduah’s

response to critics after the

Dana and Associated Airlines

crashes reeked of arrogance.

The latest revelation that she

forced the Nigerian Civil

Aviation Authority to buy her

bulletproof vehicles has again

elicited calls for her removal

and prosecution but

considering the way the

President has treated public

outcries against these powerful

women, Oduah is likely to

remain minister till the end of

Jonathan’s administration.

Princess Stella Oduah was born

on January 5, 1962 to Igwe

D.O. Oduah of Akili-Ozizor in

Anambra State on January 5,

1962.

She got her Bachelor’s degree

in accounting and MBA from

American universities.

Oduah joined the Nigerian

National Petroleum Corporation

in 1983 and in 1992, she

established a petroleum

products marketing company,

Sea Petroleum & Gas Company

Limited. She was married to the

former Minister for Works, Chris

Ogiemwonyi.

ARUNMA OTEH

Through her battles, the

Director-General of the

Securities Exchange

Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh,

has sufficiently earned the

name ‘Iron lady’ even beyond

her official sphere of influence.

When she clashed with the

House of Representatives

Committee on the Capital

Market, it was the chairman of

the committee, Mr. Herman

Hembe, that got hurt.

The committee had accused

Oteh of fraud and

misappropriation of funds. She

fired back, accusing Hembe of

demanding bribe from SEC. The

SEC board suspended Oteh in

order to investigate the findings

of the lawmakers, who probed

the capital market and indicted

her. She immediately petitioned

the President and Okonjo-

Iweala. After two months, the

President returned Oteh to her

position, following the auditor’s

report that said her offence

amounted only to

‘administrative lapses.’ The

directors and staff of the

commission, who had protested

Oteh’s alleged high-

handedness, were advised to

calm down and obey their

boss.

On the other hand, Hembe was

arraigned by the Economic and

Financial Crimes Commission

and also stepped down as

chairman of the committee.

The crisis led to an intense

battle between President

Jonathan and the House of

Representatives. The House

demanded the sacking of Oteh

but Jonathan refused.

The passage of the 2013

budget was delayed because of

the fight. Eventually, the

lawmakers insisted on zero

budget for SEC to force the

President’s hand, but he did

not budge. Calls for her

removal by civil society groups

also fell on deaf ears. Oteh,

who is an indigene of Abia

State, is also a British citizen.

She graduated with first-class

degree in computer sciences

from the University of Nigeria in

Nsukka and earned her MBA

from Harvard Business School.

Lagos BRT Workers To Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

Commuters in Lagos, western

Nigeria, were stranded,

Saturday morning, when

workers with the Bus Rapid

Transit, BRT scheme refused to

work as they protested

their unpaid salaries.

The commuters, who expected

to board the bus after the

monthly sanitation, were left to

bemuse their fate when the

boarding points at Ketu and

Ojota bus stops were empty.

Findings revealed that the

ticketers and drivers refused to

work as their salary for last

month had not been paid-a

situation which they are not

used to.

The ticketers and bus drivers

met with their bosses at their

Ketu office and efforts made by

our correspondent to get the

management to talk, proved

futile as the

correspondent was bundled out

of the park and his

recording device seized.

However, two of the drivers

who later spoke on the

condition of anonymity,

accused a senior staff of

cutting

their earnings.

According to one of the drivers

who claimed to be a senior

staff,”since this man came on

board, things have changed

drastically. He has kept making

promises which he has never

kept for once. Our salary was

always paid on the twenty-fifth

of the month but now, we are

yet to get our salaries.

“We used to get eight tins of

milk monthly before he came

but presently, we don’t get any

and there isn’t any

explanation for this.

“The leadership has not also

told the truth about our salary

because we earn just N45,000

as against the N75,000 that

outsiders have been made to

believe”.

Ex-Army Officer, A Colonel, Arrested In Boko Haram Operation

Boko Haram has always

enjoyed insider support

and that explains why

their deadly operations

are most times

successful. A lieutenant

colonel (rtd), who was

said to have led the Boko

Haram attacks on

Damaturu, Yobe State, on

Thursday has been

arrested with other Boko

Haram agents by security

forces.

The retired army officer,

who is being detained at a

military facility, was

arrested during the

operation.

Director of Army Public

Relations, Brig. Gen.

Ibrahim, put the casualty

figure on the part of the

insurgents at 70 in a

statement that was silent

on the number of soldiers

killed in the attack.

It was however, learnt that

nine soldiers including a

lieutenant and four

policemen lost their lives

in the attack.

“The retired lieutenant

colonel was properly

discharged from the Army

and it was a big surprise

when he was arrested and

identified by those who

knew him as a former

officer,” an Army source

said.

The Director of Defence

Information, Brig. Gen.

Chris Olukolade, said:

“We are capable of

dealing with it [Boko

Haram] decisively. We will

continue to do the

required adjustment both

in approach and structure

to respond appropriately

and ensure that our duty

to defend the country and

the citizenry is discharged

effectively.”

Mum of 14 sold her daughters' virginity

A mother of 14 tried to

make ends meet, police

say, by pushing her

into "hell" and

selling their virginity for a

couple of hundred dollars.

Margarita de Jesus Zapata

Moreno, 45, was arrested

this week together with a

51-year-old contractor who

police believe impregnated

one of the young

daughters.

She broke down in tears

when she stood in front of

the cameras after being

arrested in Bogota, the

Colombian capital. The

Bogota Metropolitan Police

say Zapata sold the

virginity of 12 daughters to

much older men seeking to

have sex with young

virgins.

Authorities also say the

suspect would begin selling

her daughters to men as

soon as the girls turned 12

years old. She charged

anywhere between 300,000

and 400,000 Colombian

Pesos ($160 to $212) for a

virgin.

But Zapata strongly denies

the accusation. Colombian

authorities often show

high-profile suspects to the

media shortly after

arresting them. When

Zapata was standing in

front of the cameras

Wednesday, one of the

reporters shouted a

question to her: "Did you

prostitute your daughters?"

She answered: "No, my

darling."

Colombian police say they

learned of this alleged

case of abuse because one

of the alleged victims

stepped forward.

Authorities say one of the

suspect's daughters forced

into prostitution gave birth

to a baby boy when she

was 14. She had refused

her mother's orders to

have an abortion.

Colonel Carlos Melendez, a

Bogota Metropolitan Police

spokesman, told CNN

affiliate Caracol TV the

young girl described to

investigators the "hell" in

which she lived when she

was still a prepubescent

girl, about being forced to

have sex with much older

men in her home and

about a life of abuse and

neglect.

"She was a minor and she

still had the courage to

report the abuse and also

to refuse to have an

abortion. That's when this

investigation started, from

the threats of her own

mother," Melendez said.

The investigation took

more than a year to

complete because the only

witness willing to testify,

the 14-year-old girl, now

16, disappeared,

apparently because she

feared her mother would

kill her for going to the

police.

After she reappeared, she

also told authorities about

a man who had sex with

her and got her pregnant.

Police arrested a 51-year-

old man who investigators

say fathered the son of the

girl who was 14 years old

when the baby was born.

The suspect declined to

comment at Wednesday's

police presentation.

Police are asking the rest

of the daughters to provide

more information about

this case. "Those who are

watching or listening to us,

we would like to ask them

to come to the police so

that they give us

information about

transpired in this case,"

Melendez said.

Police investigators say

Zapata also forced her

older daughters to drink

alcohol and do drugs.

Some ended up working as

prostitutes and are

missing, police said.

Police say those two

arrests are only the

beginning. Investigators

say they will also build

cases against the men who

were having sex with these

minors.

According to authorities,

only two of Margarita de

Jesus Zapata Moreno's 14

children were not forced

into prostitution. They were

the two youngest -- an 11-

year-old boy and a 9-year-

old girl -- and they have

been placed in the custody

of a Colombian

government child

protection agency.

Actress Kemi Afolabi Opens Up On Going Nudé In Movies

The beautiful actress, who
is known for wearing
skimpy dresses, speaks
on her selling point:
One thing I would
say is that, going
nude in movies does
not come with the
job now. What you
need as an actress is
your inspiration and
delivery. That is the
way you are able to
get across to your
fans. Nobody is
going to tell me I
have to wear pant
and bra. It does not
come with the job.
Acting goes beyond
that, to me it is your
expression and how
you are able to get
across to those who
look up to you. It is
a thing of the mind
and the choice we
make.
If it comes to the
character where you have
to act the prostitute...
We have the corporate
prostitutes who do not
expose their body
because that is what they
do. Naturally I don’t like
wearing a lot of things on
my body when I am
home. But that does not
take me to the movie set
and start exposing my
body. Not because I am
married. Sometimes you
need to show some flesh,
like when you are acting
the role where you have
to seduce a man.

Wike Dares Amaechi To Leave PDP Now; Amaechi Fires Back

The Supervising Minister
of Education, Nyesom
Wike, on Sunday dared
the Rivers State Governor,
Rotimi Amaechi, and his
supporters to leave the
Peoples Democratic Party
for another political party.
But Governor Amaechi
said Wike should be more
interested in how to get
students back to the
school instead of leaving
Abuja every week to play
dirty politics in Rivers
State.
"As supervising
minister for
education, it should
have been
reasonable for Wike
to bother about the
fact that students
roam the streets and
take to heinous
crimes because of a
protracted strike by
lecturers."
Wike said Amaechi and
his supporters should join
another party if they
believed they are popular,
promising that he (Wike)
and his followers would
celebrate the exit of the
governor from the PDP.
The minister, who made
this remark during a rally
organised by the
Grassroots Development
Initiative in Port Harcourt,
said “If you think you are
so popular, why not join
another party. The day
they join another party,
we will do thanksgiving.
We will have to celebrate
their exit.
“The day you dare it is
the day you see the
consequences. We are
going to resist any
attempt to say that our
votes will not count.
Everybody is jittery. Why
are they jittery? We are
not worried, they are
worried.”
Wike claimed that the
support for President
Goodluck Jonathan in
Niger Delta is not based
on sentiments but
because he (Jonathan)
had done well.
Reacting to Wike's
outburst, Chief of Staff,
Government House, Chief
Tony Okocha, said he
should concern himself
more about the capital
flight and the attendant
brain-drain in the
education sector in
Nigeria.
“Rivers people are wiser.
Wike’s ranting every
weekend in Rivers leaves
much to be imagined
especially as the country
is relapsing to the Dark
Age.
“Rivers people are not
opposed to Mr. President.
Wike should stop his
attempt to commonise the
office of Mr. President in
his attempt to curry under
served favour.
“What may be in the issue
is purely ideology, which
is common with great
minds. Wike should be
thought that ideas rule the
world. Petty mind discuss
people,” Okocha said.

N255m Cars Scandal: NCAA Says It Can't Find The Documents

The controversy trailing

the purchase of 2 BMW

armoured cars for the

minister of aviation, Stella

Oduah, has taken a

ridiculous dimension. The

agency at the centre of

the controversial purchase

of the vehicles and the

nation’s civil aviation

body - Nigerian Civil

Aviation Authority (NCAA)

- has denied that it has

any document relating to

the acquisition of the

controversial bulletproof

vehicles.

The development came as

indications emerged that

Stella Oduah may have

used the cars as a

smokescreen to engage in

serious money laundering,

with the knowledge of

higher authorities...

Curiously, NCAA’s denial,

which came after a

seven-day ultimatum

given to it by a human

rights activist, Femi

Falana (SAN), to furnish

his law firm with

information pertaining to

the transaction, also

contradicts its statement

before the House of Reps

Committee on Aviation

that the procurement of

the “operational vehicles”

was provided for in the

NCAA’s budget.

Falana had last week

invoked the Freedom of

Information Act when he

wrote the NCAA director-

general, Mr Fola

Akinkuotu, demanding the

documents, including

those of budgetary

approval and due process

for the whole transaction

as well as all the papers

of past acquisition of

such armoured cars.

In its reply to the request,

through the NCAA legal

adviser, Mr E.K

Chukwuma, Akinkuotu

said documents relating

to the latest purchase or

even previous purchases

of such cars are not in

their possession.

The letter reads: “I am

directed to your letter

dated 21st October 2013

on the above matter

(Request for information

on N255m armoured cars

for Aviation Minister, Ms

Stella Oduah) and to

inform you that the

Nigerian Civil Aviation

Authority is not in

possession of any

document relating to the

purchase of armoured

cars for the Aviation

Minister, Ms Stella Oduah.

“With regard to your

request for records of

previous purchase of

armoured cars by the

Aviation Ministry or NCAA,

I am to inform you that

the Nigerian Civil Aviation

Authority does not have

such records.”

Not satisfied, Falana

noted yesterday that he

would relate this latest

position of the NCAA to

the Economic and

Financial Crimes

Commission, EFCC, as a

back-up to a petition he

had written to it.

Armoured cars also

missing in NSA’s security

list

The controversial

bulletproof cars for Stella

Uduah are not on the

national security adviser’s

(NSA) official list of

armoured cars available

anywhere in Nigeria.

Ordinarily, no car dealer

or end user, including

private individuals,

security agencies and

government parastatals,

can bring in armoured

cars into the country

without obtaining end user

certificates from the office

of the NSA in Abuja.

Reporting that no

authorization certificate

was ever issued to either

the minister or the NCAA

to procure the

controversial vehicles, a

source said: “We have

thoroughly checked our

list and I can confirm that

at no time did we issue

end user certificate to

anyone to procure any

such cars. It is likely the

cars do not exist and that

the documents were either

forged to steal public

funds.

“But if the cars indeed

exist, the minister, the

NCAA and Coscharis

Motors will have to

explain why they sneaked

vehicles into our country

without authorisation. It is

a serious violation, and

the minister and other

people involved have a lot

of explanations to make.”

3-year-old Boy Dies While Hugging Electrocuted Mum And 3 Others In Lagos -

**Oh Nigeria...~SAD~

Victims of the electrocution

at Oniwaya

Junction, Agege

According to PUNCH report,

on

Wednesday, October 16, a

day after

Muslim folks celebrated

Sallah, tragedy

struck at Oniwaya Junction,

Agege,

Lagos, as a high tension

cable

electrocuted four people in

the area.

A woman, identified as Mrs.

Oluwajedalo but popularly

called Iya

Fathia, survived the

electrocution but

lost his three-year-old son,

Ayomide,

who ran towards her and

embraced her

as electric shock overtook

her.

The incident was still a hot

topic of

discussion when Saturday

PUNCH

visited the area on Tuesday

as some

people were seen

discussing it in the

front of house Number 88,

Oniwaya

Road, where the incident

occurred.

There is a transformer

located at

Oniwaya Junction. House

no 88 is just

two houses away from the

transformer.

A resident of the house, Mr.

James

Eboh, promptly pointed to a

paper on a

wall, a poster of the four

victims of the

electrocution – Ayomide

Oluwajedalo

(3), Sunday Hisaun (25),

Samson

Akinrinsoye (25) and

Matthew (37).

Eboh shook his head and

said the

three-year-old victim

should not have

died.

He said:

The incident occurred

around 8pm.

There was a spark on the

transformer

over there. As we heard the

spark,

everybody scampered for

safety

because it had happened

before. A

cable detached from the

transformer as

the spark went off. It fell on

this shop

here (in the front of No 88).

Iya Fathia

moved towards the shop to

warn the

shop owner, who was

inside at the

time. But she stepped on a

metal on

which the shop was built.

As the electric shock went

through her

body, she was shaking

violently.

Ayomide who sighted her

mother at

the entrance of the house,

ran towards

her and embraced her. He

died on the

spot. But his mother

survived.

I am the closest friend of

Iya Fathia

(Ayomide’s mother) in this

house. I was

one of those who took her

to a hospital

in Egbeda. It is just sad

because the

woman is not sane at the

moment.

Asked how Mrs.

Oluwajedalo could be

located, Eboh said her

family had

requested for her discharge

at the

hospital in Egbeda where

she was

undergoing treatment and

taken her to

Ijebu-Ode.

“The woman was still in

shock and she

did not seem to be

improving. The

family had spent a lot on

her

treatment. They decided to

move her to

Ijebu-Ode because the cost

was

becoming unbearable for

them. The

last time I spoke with her in

Egbeda,

she was not sounding

normal. She was

only saying, ‘My son is not

dead! My

son is okay! My son is not

dead”, Eboh

said.

He explained that the young

victim had

been buried at the Jafojo

Cemetery.

Abiola Oladimeji, who was

in his shop

when the high tension cable

fell on it,

said he survived by divine

grace. “I was

told Iya Fathia was coming

to alert us

when she was electrocuted.

It is just

unfortunate”, he said.

It was a wonder that

Oladimeji was not

electrocuted because his

shop on which

the cable fell is a moveable

metal

container.

When Saturday PUNCH got

to the scene

on Tuesday, the cable that

caused the

electrocution had been

removed. It is

common to see high

tension cables

hanging precariously over

residential

areas in Lagos.

Women Who Are More Powerful Than Jonathan

Since inception, President

Goodluck Jonathan’s

administration has been

accused of impunity, usually

caused by decisions and

actions of the President,

including those of his ministers

and close associates.

Most of the glaring cases of

abuse of power including

reckless spending of taxpayers’

money have been carried out

by the women in Jonathan’s

cabinet. These women have

proven to be more powerful

than the

number one citizen of Nigeria

because despite public outcries

that greet some of their

decisions, they go scot-free.

Those who fall in this

seemingly untouchable

category are the First Lady,

Mrs. Patience Jonathan; the

Coordinating Minister for the

Economy and Minister of

Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-

Iweala; the Minister of

Petroleum Resources, Mrs.

Diezani Alison-Madueke; the

Director-General of the

Securities and Exchange

Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh;

and the Minister of Aviation,

Ms. Stella Oduah.

These powerful women have

some things in common. They

are all from the South-East and

South-South geopolitical

zones. Four of them had their

higher education in the United

States and two of them are

daughters of traditional rulers.

Needless to say they occupy

some of the most strategic and

‘lucrative’ positions in the

Federal Government.

PATIENCE JONATHAN

In Nigeria’s history, Patience

Jonathan is believed to be the

most powerful First Lady in

terms of the amount of

influence she has over her

husband and his cabinet. Mrs.

Jonathan first gave a glimpse

into the enormous power she

wields in 2011 when she

traversed the country,

campaigning for her husband in

a way that irked many

Nigerians.

Several calls by individuals and

groups to the President to

restrain his wife yielded no

result. Also, in June this year,

in apparent violation of the

electoral act, Mrs. Jonathan

reportedly started campaigning

for her husband ahead of the

2015 elections. Another show

of impunity by the President’s

wife is the way she cripples any

town or city she visits with her

long motorcade, including

bulletproof limousines and

scores of armed policemen.

She grounded Lagos in 2012

when she visited to say “thank

you” to some women groups

for their support in electing her

husband. Despite the protest

by several Nigerians, who felt

that their right to move freely in

their country was violated by

the movement of an unelected

individual, the President’s wife

was never cautioned, at least

not publicly. Instead, the

Presidency rose to her defence,

giving her the liberty to do more

in other cities. Her visits and

grounding of traffic in Port

Harcourt and Warri were also

greeted with wide

condemnations.

To show how powerful she is,

Mrs. Jonathan publicly

admitted making attempts to

dictate to the Governor of

Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, a

move that largely precipitated

the ongoing political crisis in

the state.

In Aso Rock, where she resides

with her husband, the fear of

Mrs. Jonathan is the beginning

of wisdom as she leaves no

one in doubt that she is in

charge. There is always a

retinue of favour seekers

waiting to see her daily.

Mrs. Jonathan, a native of

Bayelsa State, was born in Port

Harcourt on October 25, 1957

and holds National Certificate of

Education in Mathematics and

Biology from the Rivers State

College of Arts and Science,

and a Bachelor of Education

degree in biology and

psychology from the University

of Port Harcourt.

NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA

Right from when the

negotiation to bring her from

the World Bank started, it was

obvious that Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-

Iweala was bound to wield so

much power in Jonathan’s

government.

With her position as the

coordinating minister for the

economy (a new position

created for her) and Finance

Minister, Okonjo-Iweala, who is

currently 83rd on Forbes’

global list of powerful women,

calls the shots as far as

Nigeria’s economy is

concerned. While doing that,

she has called the bluff of many

including state governors and

the National Assembly without

any consequence.

The state governors, who have

complained about the shabby

way the minister treat them,

have called for her removal

while the Academic Staff Union

of Universities has called her a

‘dictator.’ But no matter the

protest, Okonjo-Iweala remains

a darling of the President.

The sacking of Mr. Shuaib

Yushau as the Head, Media and

Information Unit of the National

Emergency Management

Agency, after he wrote what

was considered a critical article

against Okonjo-Iweala, further

showed that the minister was

not to be messed with.

The article entitled ‘Still on

Okonjo-Iweala over

Controversial Appointments’,

published on March 6, called

on the minister “to ensure that

appointments into important

positions should be done in

credible and transparent

manner that can withstand

public scrutiny.”

Similarly, Mr. Lawrence Ani,

was reportedly suspended

indefinitely from his job as

Saturday Editor of Thisday

Newspaper for publishing a

story that cited data that

indicated a drop in Nigeria’s

Gross Domestic Product under

Okonjo-Iweala’s watch.

In 2011, against the opinion of

the majority of Nigerians,

Okonjo-Iweala and the Minister

of Petroleum Resources,

Diezani Alison-Madueke,

insisted on the removal of fuel

subsidy, and literally ordered it

on the outset of 2012, resulting

in the Occupy Nigeria protest.

Okonjo-Iweala, who also

served as finance minister and

foreign minister under President

Olusegun Obansanjo and as a

Managing Director at the World

Bank, was born on June 13,

1954 to Professor Chukuka

Okonjo, who is the Obi

(traditional ruler) of Ogwashi-

Uku.

She graduated from Harvard

University in 1977, and earned

her Ph.D. in regional economic

development from the

Massachusetts Institute of

Technology in 1981.

She is married to Ikemba Iweala

from Abia State.

DIEZANI ALISON-MADUEKE

Virtually all sections of the

Nigerian society have called for

the resignation of the Petroleum

Resources Minister, Diezani

Alison-Madueke, all to no avail.

Most of those who sought her

removal had cited several

allegations of corrupt practices

under her watch as reasons for

their demand.

After the revelation of massive

fraud in the fuel subsidy

administration to the tune of

N1.7trn, many had thought

that heads would roll, including

that of Alison-Madueke, who

supervised the rot. Some heads

did roll, but not that of the

queen of the Nigeria oil and gas

industry.

Till date, the Presidency has

not queried or probed Diezani

over allegations against her

and the indictment of

departments under her by

several panels, including those

headed by Nuhu Ribadu,

Farouk Lawan, and Aigboje Aig-

Imoukhuede as well as the

Nigerian Extractive Industry

Transparency Initiative.

Diezani has also not explained

to Nigeria, whom she was

appointed to serve, what role

she played in the massive

corruption that led to the loss

of huge amounts of public fund.

Apart from the demands for the

Alison-Madueke’s resignation

and prosecution by civil society

groups, who led the Occupy

Nigeria protest, the House of

Representatives also

demanded her removal as

minister.

Despite this, the President did

not suspend her, and gave no

explanation for that. This

shows how powerful she is.

Alison-Madueke is the first

woman to hold the position of

Minister of Petroleum

Resources in Nigeria, and in

October 2010 she became the

first woman to head a country’s

delegation at the annual OPEC

conference. She was also the

first female Minister of

Transportation, and the first

woman to be appointed to the

board of Shell Petroleum

Development Company Nigeria.

Alison-Madueke was born on

December 6, 1960 in Port

Harcourt.

She graduated from Howard

University in 1992, with a

Bachelor’s degree in

architecture and returned to

Nigeria to join Shell Petroleum

Development Corporation.

About 10 years later, she

earned an MBA from Cambridge

University and was appointed

as the first female executive

director of Shell Nigeria.

In 1999, she got married to

Admiral Alison Madueke (retd),

one-time Chief of Naval Staff

who was at different times

military governor of Imo and

Anambra states.

STELLA ODUAH

Not many are aware of the

tremendous power of the

Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah,

in Jonathan’s government. For

her role in Jonathan’s 2011

campaign, she was reportedly

rewarded with a ministerial

appointment to the aviation

ministry, even though she had

no prior training in the field of

aviation.

Many believe that the President

feels indebted to her for her role

as the Director of Finance and

Administration of the Jonathan/

Sambo Campaign Organisation

and in the establishment of

Neighbour-to-Neighbour outfit,

which reportedly spent billions

of naira on adverts and media

propaganda in favour of

Jonathan, especially while the

Occupy Nigeria protest lasted.

Considering this relationship

with Jonathan, it should not be

a surprise that Oduah’s

response to critics after the

Dana and Associated Airlines

crashes reeked of arrogance.

The latest revelation that she

forced the Nigerian Civil

Aviation Authority to buy her

bulletproof vehicles has again

elicited calls for her removal

and prosecution but

considering the way the

President has treated public

outcries against these powerful

women, Oduah is likely to

remain minister till the end of

Jonathan’s administration.

Princess Stella Oduah was born

on January 5, 1962 to Igwe

D.O. Oduah of Akili-Ozizor in

Anambra State on January 5,

1962.

She got her Bachelor’s degree

in accounting and MBA from

American universities.

Oduah joined the Nigerian

National Petroleum Corporation

in 1983 and in 1992, she

established a petroleum

products marketing company,

Sea Petroleum & Gas Company

Limited. She was married to the

former Minister for Works, Chris

Ogiemwonyi.

ARUNMA OTEH

Through her battles, the

Director-General of the

Securities Exchange

Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh,

has sufficiently earned the

name ‘Iron lady’ even beyond

her official sphere of influence.

When she clashed with the

House of Representatives

Committee on the Capital

Market, it was the chairman of

the committee, Mr. Herman

Hembe, that got hurt.

The committee had accused

Oteh of fraud and

misappropriation of funds. She

fired back, accusing Hembe of

demanding bribe from SEC. The

SEC board suspended Oteh in

order to investigate the findings

of the lawmakers, who probed

the capital market and indicted

her. She immediately petitioned

the President and Okonjo-

Iweala. After two months, the

President returned Oteh to her

position, following the auditor’s

report that said her offence

amounted only to

‘administrative lapses.’ The

directors and staff of the

commission, who had protested

Oteh’s alleged high-

handedness, were advised to

calm down and obey their

boss.

On the other hand, Hembe was

arraigned by the Economic and

Financial Crimes Commission

and also stepped down as

chairman of the committee.

The crisis led to an intense

battle between President

Jonathan and the House of

Representatives. The House

demanded the sacking of Oteh

but Jonathan refused.

The passage of the 2013

budget was delayed because of

the fight. Eventually, the

lawmakers insisted on zero

budget for SEC to force the

President’s hand, but he did

not budge. Calls for her

removal by civil society groups

also fell on deaf ears. Oteh,

who is an indigene of Abia

State, is also a British citizen.

She graduated with first-class

degree in computer sciences

from the University of Nigeria in

Nsukka and earned her MBA

from Harvard Business School.

Lagos BRT Workers To Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

Commuters in Lagos, western

Nigeria, were stranded,

Saturday morning, when

workers with the Bus Rapid

Transit, BRT scheme refused to

work as they protested

their unpaid salaries.

The commuters, who expected

to board the bus after the

monthly sanitation, were left to

bemuse their fate when the

boarding points at Ketu and

Ojota bus stops were empty.

Findings revealed that the

ticketers and drivers refused to

work as their salary for last

month had not been paid-a

situation which they are not

used to.

The ticketers and bus drivers

met with their bosses at their

Ketu office and efforts made by

our correspondent to get the

management to talk, proved

futile as the

correspondent was bundled out

of the park and his

recording device seized.

However, two of the drivers

who later spoke on the

condition of anonymity,

accused a senior staff of

cutting

their earnings.

According to one of the drivers

who claimed to be a senior

staff,”since this man came on

board, things have changed

drastically. He has kept making

promises which he has never

kept for once. Our salary was

always paid on the twenty-fifth

of the month but now, we are

yet to get our salaries.

“We used to get eight tins of

milk monthly before he came

but presently, we don’t get any

and there isn’t any

explanation for this.

“The leadership has not also

told the truth about our salary

because we earn just N45,000

as against the N75,000 that

outsiders have been made to

believe”.

Ex-Army Officer, A Colonel, Arrested In Boko Haram Operation

Boko Haram has always

enjoyed insider support

and that explains why

their deadly operations

are most times

successful. A lieutenant

colonel (rtd), who was

said to have led the Boko

Haram attacks on

Damaturu, Yobe State, on

Thursday has been

arrested with other Boko

Haram agents by security

forces.

The retired army officer,

who is being detained at a

military facility, was

arrested during the

operation.

Director of Army Public

Relations, Brig. Gen.

Ibrahim, put the casualty

figure on the part of the

insurgents at 70 in a

statement that was silent

on the number of soldiers

killed in the attack.

It was however, learnt that

nine soldiers including a

lieutenant and four

policemen lost their lives

in the attack.

“The retired lieutenant

colonel was properly

discharged from the Army

and it was a big surprise

when he was arrested and

identified by those who

knew him as a former

officer,” an Army source

said.

The Director of Defence

Information, Brig. Gen.

Chris Olukolade, said:

“We are capable of

dealing with it [Boko

Haram] decisively. We will

continue to do the

required adjustment both

in approach and structure

to respond appropriately

and ensure that our duty

to defend the country and

the citizenry is discharged

effectively.”

Mum of 14 sold her daughters' virginity

A mother of 14 tried to

make ends meet, police

say, by pushing her

into "hell" and

selling their virginity for a

couple of hundred dollars.

Margarita de Jesus Zapata

Moreno, 45, was arrested

this week together with a

51-year-old contractor who

police believe impregnated

one of the young

daughters.

She broke down in tears

when she stood in front of

the cameras after being

arrested in Bogota, the

Colombian capital. The

Bogota Metropolitan Police

say Zapata sold the

virginity of 12 daughters to

much older men seeking to

have sex with young

virgins.

Authorities also say the

suspect would begin selling

her daughters to men as

soon as the girls turned 12

years old. She charged

anywhere between 300,000

and 400,000 Colombian

Pesos ($160 to $212) for a

virgin.

But Zapata strongly denies

the accusation. Colombian

authorities often show

high-profile suspects to the

media shortly after

arresting them. When

Zapata was standing in

front of the cameras

Wednesday, one of the

reporters shouted a

question to her: "Did you

prostitute your daughters?"

She answered: "No, my

darling."

Colombian police say they

learned of this alleged

case of abuse because one

of the alleged victims

stepped forward.

Authorities say one of the

suspect's daughters forced

into prostitution gave birth

to a baby boy when she

was 14. She had refused

her mother's orders to

have an abortion.

Colonel Carlos Melendez, a

Bogota Metropolitan Police

spokesman, told CNN

affiliate Caracol TV the

young girl described to

investigators the "hell" in

which she lived when she

was still a prepubescent

girl, about being forced to

have sex with much older

men in her home and

about a life of abuse and

neglect.

"She was a minor and she

still had the courage to

report the abuse and also

to refuse to have an

abortion. That's when this

investigation started, from

the threats of her own

mother," Melendez said.

The investigation took

more than a year to

complete because the only

witness willing to testify,

the 14-year-old girl, now

16, disappeared,

apparently because she

feared her mother would

kill her for going to the

police.

After she reappeared, she

also told authorities about

a man who had sex with

her and got her pregnant.

Police arrested a 51-year-

old man who investigators

say fathered the son of the

girl who was 14 years old

when the baby was born.

The suspect declined to

comment at Wednesday's

police presentation.

Police are asking the rest

of the daughters to provide

more information about

this case. "Those who are

watching or listening to us,

we would like to ask them

to come to the police so

that they give us

information about

transpired in this case,"

Melendez said.

Police investigators say

Zapata also forced her

older daughters to drink

alcohol and do drugs.

Some ended up working as

prostitutes and are

missing, police said.

Police say those two

arrests are only the

beginning. Investigators

say they will also build

cases against the men who

were having sex with these

minors.

According to authorities,

only two of Margarita de

Jesus Zapata Moreno's 14

children were not forced

into prostitution. They were

the two youngest -- an 11-

year-old boy and a 9-year-

old girl -- and they have

been placed in the custody

of a Colombian

government child

protection agency.

Actress Kemi Afolabi Opens Up On Going Nudé In Movies

The beautiful actress, who
is known for wearing
skimpy dresses, speaks
on her selling point:
One thing I would
say is that, going
nude in movies does
not come with the
job now. What you
need as an actress is
your inspiration and
delivery. That is the
way you are able to
get across to your
fans. Nobody is
going to tell me I
have to wear pant
and bra. It does not
come with the job.
Acting goes beyond
that, to me it is your
expression and how
you are able to get
across to those who
look up to you. It is
a thing of the mind
and the choice we
make.
If it comes to the
character where you have
to act the prostitute...
We have the corporate
prostitutes who do not
expose their body
because that is what they
do. Naturally I don’t like
wearing a lot of things on
my body when I am
home. But that does not
take me to the movie set
and start exposing my
body. Not because I am
married. Sometimes you
need to show some flesh,
like when you are acting
the role where you have
to seduce a man.
