This Government Is Not Ready, The Strike Continues ––ASUU

Public university lecturers

under the umbrella of the

Academic Staff Union of

Universities, ASUU, on

Sunday insisted that they

would not return to the

classrooms on Monday as

directed by the federal

government.

They also accused the

President Gooodluck

Jonathan-led Government

of insincerity in its bid to

resolve the 6 months old

dispute. ASUU President,

Dr. Nasir Fagge,

confirmed their stand to

go on with the strike...

The Federal Government

had through the Executive

Secretary of the National

Universities Commission,

Prof. Julius Okojie,

deferred its earlier

ultimatum to the lecturers

to resume work on

Monday (today) or risk

being sacked. The shift

was to enable them to

participate in the burial of

Prof. Festus Iyayi, a

former president of ASUU

on Saturday.

Before this, the

Supervising Minister of

Education, Nyesom Wike,

had advised the striking

lecturers to return to work

on or before December 4

or face dismissal.

But ASUU had in a news

bulletin to its chapters

after its meeting in

Ekpoma, Edo State on

Sunday, said the Federal

Government had not met

its conditions for

suspending the over five

months’ strike.

When asked by Punch if

the members of the union

would go back to work

today and if they had

confirmed the N200bn the

Federal Government

claimed to have deposited

in a special account at

the Central Bank of

Nigeria, Fagge simply

replied, “No to both

questions.”

ASUU had in the bulletin

insisted that the

government threat to sack

its members would not

break the union’s resolve

to pursue its action to a

logical conclusion.

A source privy to the

meeting, said:

“No Jupiter will force us

to go and teach until all

the agreements are

documented. The Federal

Government is not

sincere. If indeed the

authorities have agreed,

why will they be afraid to

document what has been

agreed upon?

“Let the vice-chancellors,

who can teach, go and do

so. But our members are

determined not to sign

any attendance register

tomorrow (today). The

threat does not bother us,

as truth will always

supercede deception, lies

and any form of

intimidation.”

ASUU Goes To War With Federal Government Again

Who blinks first as we enter the

second deadline given by the

Federal Government to ASUU?

As at Sunday morning, it

remains uncertain whether the

Academic Staff Union of Nigeria

Universities would call off its

five-month-old strike, despite

the Government’s Monday

ultimatum. There were

speculations that the university

lecturers would suspend the

strike after the burial ceremony

for their ex-President, Prof.

Festus Iyayi, who was killed in

an accident involving Kogi

State governor’s convoy.

But credible sources inside

ASUU say government is yet to

meet all their demands, strike

continues...

The Chairman, ASUU, University

of Benin, Dr. Tony Monye-

Emina said, “The strike has not

been called off. The authority

(of the institution) is following

government’s directive; we are

not shifting our stand. It is not

a local strike.

“It is not true we are calling off

the strike. How can we be

holding a meeting tonight? The

burial is going on and it

continues tomorrow (today).”

Also, ASUU in Olabisi Onabanjo

University, Ogun State, vowed

not to obey government’s order

that lecturers should return to

classroom on Monday. The

Chairman, ASUU, OOU chapter,

Dr. Nasir Adesola said the

lecturers would not succumb to

threats by government to sack

them.

Adesola, who is also the

South-West Coordinator, ASUU,

stressed that since the

lecturers did not go on strike in

the first instance because of

government, they would not

return to work by coercion from

government.

He stated that the lecturers

would only go back to the

classroom when the

government meet their

demands.

“We didn’t go on strike because

of government order. The

reasons for which we embarked

on the strike have not been

discharged by the government.

Those orders of government are

just part of executive

recklessness. We are not

returning to work on Monday,”

Adesola told Punch.

Similarly, the ASUU Chairman in

Enugu State University of

Technology, Prof. Gab Agu,

said lecturers would not

resume on Monday. He said it

was a rumour that the union

would call of the strike. He

stated that the National

Executive Council of ASUU

would meet and agree before

the strike could be called off.

Same with ASUU in the

University of Nigeria, Nsukka,

where the Chairman, Dr. Ifeanyi

Abada, said only the ASUU NEC

could announce the suspension

of the strike.

You look young, but you have a

grandchild. How old are you?

I was born in 1973.

What do you do for a living?

I am a trader.

What was the total worth of

your business?

I can’t say, because I buy

goods from different markets

and sell them to make money.

How did you feel the day the

governor seized your wares:

Did you curse him as you went

home empty-handed?

No, I did not curse any one, but

I was sad just like the day I lost

my husband. That day, I cried

to God, and wondered, where

do I start from, where am I

going to? I told my God to send

my helper to me. I can’t keep

on suffering till I die.

Did you feel bitter when the

governor seized your wares?

Yes. I cried till daybreak.

Marvellous put his hand on my

head and said, “Mummy, it’s

okay.” Then I replied him,

saying, “Marvellous, let’s eat.”

But he refused. “No, mummy,

let us go to sleep,” he told me. I

did not eat anything that day

until daybreak.

How did you feel when the

governor called you?

I lost strength that day, I won’t

lie. I did not even get myself. I

was surprised when

government called me back.

Now, I thank my God. I thank

everyone in Government House,

I thank Adams Oshiomhole, and

I thank my God who used him

to help me in this condition. I

thank my brothers and sisters,

and my cousins that helped me

when my husband died.

When did you lose your

husband?

I lost my husband in January

2010. He slumped in the office

and died.

When did you get married?

We got married in 1990.

What was life like when your

husband was alive?

Life was better then. From the

time we married to 2005 when I

gave birth to my last boy

(Marvellous), things were

better. But after then, I began

to suffer; that was when he

(husband) got married to

another woman, a Yoruba

woman, and things became

difficult for me. My husband

was from Iloje, in Owan West in

Edo State. They had met in

Ibadan when my husband was

on transfer. My husband died

in Lagos.

How many children did the

other woman have for your

husband?

She had five girls for him.

How many children did your

marriage produce?

The marriage produced four

children. My first daughter,

Gloria, is 22 years old. The first

boy, Bright, is 18 years old

now. My second daughter,

Elizabeth was born in 2002. My

last boy, Marvellous is nine

years old now.

Are your children currently

schooling?

Yes. Bright has finished

secondary school and is

waiting to enter the university.

My first daughter, Gloria, is

married. Marvellous is now in

primary three; Light of Life

Primary School, in Ogida. My

second daughter, Elizabeth, is

in Favour Group of Schools;

she’s in primary five. She stays

with my sister.

How have you been coping

with the upkeep of your

children since your husband

died?

We have been managing. I am

the only one taking care of my

children and paying house rent.

Has your husband’s family

been of any assistance?

Yes, they have helped a little,

but they are doing their best.

On November 15, when I went

to the village, one gave me

plantain; another one gave me

oranges and plantain also.

What happened to your

husband’s gratuity?

They (Nigerian Police) has not

given it to me. In fact, I went to

Lagos twice, with my two sons.

We went to the Ikeja office

where we were asked to fill in

some details about the date of

employment and some other

things. But till now, we have

not heard anything from them.

Tell us about the experience

you had with that truck pusher

you said absconded with your

goods?

This happened when I went to

buy goods from the market in

the village. I bought a full bag

of pepper, a full bag of santana

(starch), garri and yam. It cost

me N25,000 in total. I gave it

to a wheelbarrow man on

Mission Road and I did not see

him again. He just

disappeared. I cried that day

until the next day when I went

to the market again to buy

goods, before Oshiomhole saw

me.

You were offered employment

by the government. Have you

taken it up and where is your

office?

I was offered employment to

work with the War Against

Indiscipline office.

Now that you have received

various sums of money, what

do you intend to do with them?

I don’t know yet, because I am

still surprised and shocked. I

feel so much joy. Now, I have

to sit down and think about

what I want to do with the

money.

How did you feel when you

heard you were all over the

Internet and in the news media

nationwide?

I was surprised, they even said

the Peoples Democratic Party

sent me N250,000, but I didn’t

take the money from them.

Have you forgiven the

governor?

Yes, a long time ago. I forgave

him on that day he seized my

wares. But I wondered where I

would start from again, and I

called unto God to help me.

Some people are still not happy

with the governor, what will you

tell them?

It is not his fault, because he

used money to build that slab,

but I didn’t put my goods on

the slab.

What will you tell your friends

who still trade on the street?

I told all of them to stop putting

their goods on the road and on

slabs.

Since the incident, you have

become a popular person. How

do you feel about it?

It is God’s wish; it is God’s

work.

This Bride Escapes Death Few Minutes After Wedding In Lagos

This bride has many reasons to

be grateful to God as she and

her man almost got killed just

minutes after their wedding,

they narrowly escaped death in

an auto crash while on their

way from the wedding

reception.

The accident involving a NNPC

tanker, a cargo truck and two

saloon cars happened at about

4:45pm close to the Otedola

bridge, Alausa, on the Lagos/

Ibadan Expressway, last

Saturday.

The bride and her husband

were said to have jumped out

of their car...

A Punch reporter who

witnessed the accident said the

NNPC truck, while descending

the slop from Alausa at top

speed, could not hold its break.

It then ran into the first car and

squashed the second one

against the cargo truck.

When the reporter got to

accident scene, the groom was

no where in sight. His elder

sister confirmed that they were

coming from the wedding

reception of the couple when

the unfortunate accident

happened.

She was seen kneeling down

and thanking God for their

escape but refused to give the

name of the couple.

"fake miracles" scandal rocked

a pentecostal church in Akwa

Ibom State, the man, Bishop

David Amoussou, who was

fingered as the mastermind of

the arranged instant healing

scam has again been embroiled

in a very messy wife snatching

tango.

The City of Truth Chapel

International, aka, Holy Ghost

Embassy, under the leadership

of Bishop Israel Usoro ran into

trouble when some pastors of

the church resigned and opted

to blow the lid off the wind of

instant miracles blowing in

each of the church service,

which they described as fake

as beneficiaries of such

miracles were hired and paid.

They had claimed that the

“new form of evangelism” was

introduced to the church by

Bishop Amoussou when he

came as a guest minister early

in the year.

While the controversy

surrounding the scandal is yet

to abate, a man who claimed

that Bishop Usoro’s spiritual

partner, that is Bishop Davis

Amoussou, has destroyed his

family, stormed The Sun

Newspaper’s office and in tears

narrated how the controversial

Bishop snatched his beautiful

wife...

His words: “My name is

Ndifreke Benson, I am reacting

to your story in Saturday Sun.

When I read through the story,

it was talking about a certain

prophet, a certain Bishop. I can

remember it was this same so

called man of God that came

with one man that comes from

Ghana, called Bishop David

Amoussou. Bishop David

Amoossou has already taken

my wife.

“ He called me in May and said

when he comes back in

September, he would take my

wife and I would do nothing.

And in September when he

came, I got a call from the

police. In fact, for the three

days that he was in Uyo, my

wife never slept at home. I only

met my wife in the police

station, Ikot Akpan Abia, where

she sat down with David

Amoussou and the other Pastor

of Paul Bassey Street, Israel

Usoro . They accused me of

coming to the hotel where they

lodged with my wife to kidnap

them.

"Even the O.C state anti-

kidnapping who knows me very

well was shocked over such

accusation. It was the elder

brother of my wife that came to

dismiss the case. He was even

telling the police what David

Amoussou has done to his

sister. My wife has three

children.

“ I brought her up 16 years ago

before she got the job at NEPA.

And just because they have

paid her severance allowance,

David Amoussou, got the

information through the other

Bishop, who brought David

Amoussou to come and cast a

spell on my wife and took my

wife .

“Right now, my wife is half

mad. She does not even know

the brother or the sister or

listen to anybody or want to

see me right now. My wife has

gone and they have rented a

house somewhere and she is

living with David Amoussou.

She is even planning to marry

him . She had called my friend

to tell him that she would be

sending a wedding card to him.

So, this is what these people

are doing in Uyo. I am a victim

and the story has to be

investigated properly.”

Asked whether he had ever

made attempt to harass

Amoussou over his alleged

relationship with his wife, the

distraught Benson said “I never

knew him at all. All I knew was

that my wife did not sleep at

home for three nights. And the

day my wife was at the police, I

was in a business centre typing

a document, and they claimed

it was at that time that I went

to the hotel to kidnap them. I

was shocked. That is to show

you that David Amoussou

wants to kill me in order to take

my wife.”

He said the police had to

quickly dismiss the kidnap case

because Amoussou himself

said that somebody told him

that he (Benson) is a very

dangerous person that was

why he went to the police.

“ My wife is under his custody .

For over two months now, I

have not set my eyes on my

wife. I have made all efforts to

trace where she is but she does

not want to see anyone that

knows her. The only call I got

was that of my friend who told

me she was ready to print a

wedding card with David

Amoussou. Some other people

are even telling me now that

she has changed her name

from Esther Ndifreke Benson to

Esther David Amoussou”,

Benson lamented.

He said he had approached the

Christian association of Nigeria,

CAN, and other notable

Christian leaders like popular

Rev Uma Ukpai to help him

retrieve his wife from the

stronghold of Bishop

Amoussou.

“I am handing everything to

God. I have already discussed

with CAN to try and plead with

David Amoussou to remove the

spell he has cast on my wife so

that my wife can return home

to take care of the three

children. I have talked to many

high Bishops. I have talked to

Uma Ukpai as well as many

others to help me talk to David

Amoussou to leave my wife

alone.” Benson also said he

was considering taking a legal

action if all other methods fail.

But reacting to the allegation:

The woman at the centre of the

storm, Mrs Esther Ndifreke

Benson, said she is no longer

married to Benson because he

has been accusing her of

infidelity even when he does

not have money to take care of

the family as a man. She

vowed to go ahead and marry

Bishop Amoussou if Benson

does not stop looking for her.

According to her: “The man,

Ndifreke Benson, who came to

you was my husband, he is no

more my husband. What really

happened is that, we got

married in the year 2000;

everything was going well and

before he met me, I am a

Christian. We went to church

together; I embraced him

because we were from the

same place. But it is not

everything, because the Bible

says that we wrestle not

against flesh and blood but

against principalities and

powers, against spiritual

wickedness in high places. It is

not everything that I saw

through my marital life that I

complained to anybody

because it is for better, for

worse.

“I have passed through all

kinds of things which I cannot

just start saying now but the

one that pained me most was

on the 7th of October this year.

He doesn’t go to church. He

has been accusing me of being

impregnated by one pastor

“I don’t really know what

happened because I was a

nursing mother then. They

went to the police station then

and I was called to testify. You

understand what I am trying to

say. Is it a crime for me to

worship God? Is it a crime for

me to go close to men of God?

happy that I am worshipping

God. But at the end, what he

will say is that I am sleeping

with these men of God .

“I endured it and never told my

people what I was passing

through. The only person who

knew what happened was my

younger sister. It is not just

something that you will start

telling people; that you are

being accused of adultery. I

kept quiet. My mother was

married till death did them part

and I had to stay in my marital

home, which I did. A lot of

things happened, but I

endured.”

She said it is the threat to her

life that made her abandon the

marriage. “The only one that

pained me most was on

October 7, he started beating

me. If not by God’s grace, I

would have been a dead

person by now. He started

beating me that I was going

out with one Amoussou. That

in fact, the man charmed me,

that the man has been using

magical oil.

“ Okay, I am going out with this

man of God as you said, why

not release me to go, but you

just wanted to kill me . He

strangled me and would have

killed me if not for the knock on

the door by my neighbour? My

neighbour knocked and he

thought that it was the

landlord, he left me. At this

stage, this is no more spiritual,

I am above it because I know

that he that is in me is greater

than he that is in the world. But

by strangling me, I was afraid.

“So what happened was that I

used wisdom; I did as if I had

settled with him. He took me to

work, I left. I had to run for my

dear life. I went to the office

and took permission to go on

leave, because I have seen as

they say death is not far. So I

decided to leave, I left

everything I had toiled and

labored for. What he is thinking

that is maybe I am going out

with the pastor, but if he should

tempt me, even though I don’t

want to marry again, if he

tempts me, I will go on and

marry that man and he can’t do

anything ."

When contacted on all his three

GSM lines, the man at the

centre of the storm, Bishop

Amousou refused to pick his

Young Nigerian couple jailed in the UK for internet banking scam

Nigerian couple, 22 year old

Aderoju Bammeke, (pictured

(pictured right) have been jailed

in the UK for being part of a

Nigerian gang that hacked into

the accounts of several people

and stole thousands of pounds

from them, Daily Mail UK

reports

"The couple were part of a

global internet banking scam

which could have netted a

phenomenal £19million after

hacking the accounts of nearly

2,500 people. Aderoju and

Jessica were the UK 'platform'

for a Nigerian 'phishing' scam

that made £41,000 in just two

months.

The plot, masterminded by a

gang in Nigeria, involved

sending fake emails to

customers of banks including

Barclays and Halifax. The

emails told recipients that their

accounts had been hacked and

asked them to complete a form

with their log-in details. But

when victims obliged,

Bammeke stepped in and

helped the gang log in to steal

money.

Fashion marketing student

Ogunyemi, his girlfriend at the

time, helped him launder the

proceeds by putting funds in

accounts, hiding cash and

allowing him to buy her a

£2,400 Vauxhall Corsa.

Bammeke has now been jailed

for three-and-a-half years at

Manchester Crown Court after

admitting conspiracy to commit

fraud and unauthorised

computer use.

Ogunyemi admitted five counts

of money laundering and was

given a suspended prison

sentence.

Michael Lavery, defending

Ogunyemi, said she had

brought shame on her family,

including her train driver father

and mother who works for

Manchester council.

He said she had been 'naive',

was predicted to get a first in

her degree and was no longer

in a relationship with

Bammeke.

Bammeke had pleaded guilty at

an earlier hearing to conspiracy

to commit fraud and

unauthorised computer use

while Ogunyemi admitted five

counts of money laundering.

Sentencing Bammeke, Judge

Recorder Gibson said: 'This in

my opinion was a sophisticated

fraud, a clever fraud and a

fraud which could very easily

have resulted in very much

more substantial money being

stolen.'

He jailed Ogunyemi for a year,

suspended for two years, and

ordered her to complete 180

hours' unpaid work.

After the hearing, Detective

Superintendent Janet Hudson

of TITAN, the North-West

Regional Crime Unit, said: 'The

actions of Bammeke and

Ogunyemi caused a great deal

of stress and uncertainty to

many affected bank customers

who had their accounts

accessed.

'As a result of the investigation,

no customers were left out of

pocket and the offenders were

arrested and ultimately

sentenced. Internet banking is

considered a safe and secure

method of banking.

'However, bank customers

need to remain vigilant and

aware of the danger posed by

fraudsters. Customers should

only ever navigate directly to

an online bank website and

should never click on any link

sent to them through an email.

'Additionally when accessing

bank accounts online

customers should always be

aware of the exact address in

order to ensure that they are

actually on a legitimate

banking website.'

Two Arrested With 11m Marijuana -

The Oyo State Police Command

has intercepted a lorry with 646

bags of weed suspected to be

marijuana. The police also

arrested two suspects, David

Ndidi and Toyin Adegoke, in

connection with the discovery.

Commissioner of Police,

Mohamed Ndabawa, said the

command acted after

intelligence was received on the

activities of the suspects.

He said “On November 29, a

consignment of weed

suspected to be Indian hemp

was packaged for conveyance

in a truck at a cannabis

plantation in Eleja village, near

Akanran, Ibadan.

The police intercepted the truck

with number plate, Lagos XR

967 JJJ. The value of the weed

is N11m. Ndidi and Adegoke

were arrested while the driver

escaped from the scene. We

are still making effort to arrest

the rest of the people involved.”

Ndidi, 30, told our

correspondent that he was an

assistant to the driver of the

vehicle and that he did not

know that the bags of weed

were marijuana.

“I was hired to assist the driver

and my fee was N10,000. The

bags were locked at the back of

the vehicle and I did not

suspect that they were

marijuana. When police

stopped us, he jumped and ran

into the bush, but I waited

because I did not suspect that

we were transporting

marijuana,” he said.

Toyin told our correspondent

that she traded in orange and

that she came from Ilorin to

buy the fruit in the village when

she was arrested.

She said, “I was buying

oranges to be transported to

Ilorin when I heard gunshots. I

thought they were armed

robbers, so I ran just as others

did. But when I realised they

were policemen, I stopped

because I knew that I was

doing legal business. But I was

arrested despite the other man

(Ndidi) telling them that I was

not one of them. I appeal to the

police to investigate the matter

again and visit my house in

Ilorin. I know nothing about

marijuana and the man

arrested in the truck,”

Farmer Kills HUGE 15-foot Snake In Ekiti -

The farmer with the name, Bayo

Ibrahim, 23, killed the big snake

around the Ado-Afao-Ekiti

environs of the state. The

snake was said to have been

notorious for killing domestic

animals in the area.

Spectators called it various

names, including “Aminurin”,

“Ojola” and “Ako Monomono”,

which are all Yoruba names for

a massive snake.

The size of the snake attracted

spectators from as far as Odo-

Ado, Oke-Ila, Basiri, Nova Road

and GRA in Ado-Ekiti, the state

capital, to the sparsely-

populated Afao road, turning it

into a Mecca of sorts.

The spectators said: “We have

never seen anything like this”;

“Is this what we have been

living with?” and “This is the

wonder of the year in Ekiti”.

They pushed one another to

catch a view of the snake,

which some said was big

enough to feed, at least 40

sturdy men.

Ibrahim, who hails from Ilorin,

the Kwara State capital, said he

saw three snakes while grazing

his herd close to the road and

killed them with a cutlass.

He said: “I am a cattle rearer. I

saw three snakes in a small

bush and killed them with my

cutlass. I sold two yesterday

for N10,000 each. I have also

sold this last one for N10,000

to that man.

“I have killed about 12 of such

snakes. They always kill our

dogs and goats. But they have

not killed any person. They do

not kill by biting. They roll

round their prey and suffocate

it, until it dies. If you want to

kill them, aim for the head and

do not miss it, because if you

do, it can be fatal. If you are

scared, do not go near it, but if

you are sharp and quick, you

will kill it easily.”

Many spectators said it was

strange to see such a long and

thick snake.

Ajayi Adekunle said: “To me

and most of us here, it is new. I

have seen such snakes many

times in movies, but never in

real life. It will easily kill and

swallow humans. You can see

how big it is. Even a car cannot

kill it. I urge people living in this

area to be careful, as more of

this snake may still be around

here.”

Truck Rams Into Classroom, Kills 7 Children In Aba -

A truck driver Thursday, at

Ogbor Hill area of Aba, Abia

state, lost control and rammed

into a classroom killing 7

school children.

Fifteen other school children
