After several weeks and
months of playing hide-
and-seek, the Presidency
has finally confirmed that
they are in no way
comfortable with Governor
Rotimi Amaechi as
chairman of Nigerian
Governors' Forum.
Reacting to the absence
of President Goodluck
Jonathan at the retreat
organised by the
Amaechi-led faction of
the Forum in Sokoto over
the weekend, the
Presidency insisted on
Sunday that it did not
recognise the Rivers State
Governor as NGF
chairman, saying the
person recognized by
President Goodluck
Jonathan as the chairman
of NGF is Governor Jonah
Jang...
President Jonathan was
billed to deliver the
keynote address at the
retreat where the resource
persons included the
Speaker of the House of
Representatives, Aminu
Tambuwwal; Nobel
Laureate, Prof. Wole
Soyinka; and Catholic
Bishop of Sokoto,
Matthew Kukah.
Below is what Jonathan's
special adviser on
Political Matters, Ahmed
Gulak, told Punch:
“What happened in Sokoto
was not a retreat for the
Nigeria Governors’ Forum.
It was an event for
Amaechi Governors
Forum. As far as the
President is concerned,
Governor Jonah Jang of
Plateau State is the
Chairman of the Nigeria
Governors’ Forum and not
Amaechi. President
Jonathan would have
attended if the event was
organised by the genuine
and proper governors’
forum.”
It would be recalled that
Amaechi defeated Jonah
Jang in a transparent
election by 19 to 16
votes.
